Frequently Asked Questions

How many coats of limewash paint do you need?

We recommend a minimum of two coats. Dalray Limewash coverage guidance is based on a specified number of coats, but actual results can vary between surfaces.

For best results, follow the product instructions regarding the recommended number of coats, drying times and application technique. Allow each coat to dry as directed before proceeding.

What is limewash paint?

Dalray Limewash is a natural mineral-based paint designed to create soft movement, subtle tonal variation and the beautifully imperfect finish characteristic of traditional limewash.

Supplied as a powder and simply mixed with water before application, our limewash creates a breathable, ultra-matte finish with natural depth and texture that develops as it dries. Each colour has been carefully developed to complement the organic variation of the finish, from warm neutrals and earthy tones to soft whites, greens and deeper shades.

Designed for both contemporary and traditional interiors, Dalray Limewash can be applied to a wide range of properly prepared surfaces to transform flat walls into finishes with depth, movement and character.

What is the difference between limewash paint and regular wall paint?

Limewash paint creates a soft, matte finish with natural tonal variation, subtle texture and an organic appearance. Unlike conventional wall paints, which are generally designed to provide a more uniform colour, limewash develops distinctive light and dark variations as it dries.

Dalray Limewash is a powdered mineral paint that is mixed with water before application. Its natural-looking finish brings depth and character to walls, making it a popular choice for interiors seeking a relaxed, textured or contemporary architectural aesthetic.

What does limewash paint look like when it dries?

Limewash paint dries to an ultra-matte, mineral finish with subtle variations in tone and depth. Depending on the colour, application technique and surface beneath it, the finished wall may display soft cloudy patterns, gentle brush marks and areas of lighter and darker colour.

This variation is part of limewash's appeal. Rather than creating a completely uniform surface, it gives walls an organic, layered appearance that changes subtly with the light throughout the day.

Is limewash paint suitable for modern and traditional homes?

Yes. Limewash paint can complement both contemporary and traditional interiors. Its understated matte finish and natural tonal variation work beautifully with timber, stone, natural textiles and other tactile materials.

In modern homes, limewash can add warmth and softness to minimalist spaces. In traditional homes, it can enhance the character of existing architectural features, including exposed brick and masonry, where the surface is suitable and properly prepared.

Can you use limewash paint on brick?

Limewash can be an excellent finish for suitable brick surfaces, creating a soft, matte appearance that complements the natural texture of the brick.

Before applying Dalray Limewash, check that the brick is compatible, clean and properly prepared. Highly absorbent or uneven surfaces may affect coverage and the final appearance, so preparation requirements should be assessed before painting.

For exterior applications, confirm the product's suitability for the specific exposure conditions and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Can Dalray Limewash Paint be used outdoors?

Dalray Limewash is suitable for most exterior surfaces, depending on the substrate and exposure conditions. Before using it outdoors, check the current product specifications to confirm that your surface and intended application are suitable.

Exterior walls can experience greater exposure to rain, moisture and changing temperatures than interior walls, so correct preparation and application are particularly important.

What colours does Dalray Limewash Paint come in?

Dalray Limewash Paint is available in a curated palette of 21 mineral-inspired colours, including soft whites, warm neutrals, earthy tones, muted greens and deeper shades.

Because limewash creates natural tonal variation, the same colour may appear slightly different depending on the surface, application technique and lighting conditions. Exploring colour samples or testing a small area before committing to a full wall can help you choose the right shade for your space.

How do you apply Dalray Limewash Paint?

Dalray Limewash is supplied as a powder that must be mixed with water before application. Once prepared according to the product instructions, it is applied using a block brush to create the characteristic soft movement and tonal variation of limewash.

For the best results, begin with a properly prepared surface, use the recommended primer where required, and follow the specified mixing and application instructions.

The application technique influences the final appearance, so consistent preparation and careful brushing are important.

Do you need a primer before applying limewash paint?

We do recommend using the Dalray limewash primer to help create a more uniform base and best results. Always check the current Dalray preparation guidelines to determine which products are appropriate for your wall.

How much limewash paint do I need for my room?

The amount of limewash paint required depends on the total wall area, the surface condition, its absorbency and the number of coats needed.

As a guide, Dalray's standard 1.6 kg powder pack makes approximately 4 litres of mixed limewash and may cover around 30m² over two coats on sealed or previously painted surfaces. Coverage may be lower on highly absorbent masonry or other porous substrates.

Measure the areas you intend to paint and check the coverage guidance for your chosen product before ordering.

White Mica also offers Dalray Limewash room bundles to help simplify purchasing the essential products for your project.

Does limewash paint need to be sealed?

Whether limewash needs sealing depends on the location, the surface and the level of protection required.

Some limewash finishes are left unsealed to preserve their natural matte appearance. In other applications, a sealer is recommended. We recommend sealing it in high traffic areas.
